    Filtration of supply and exhaust air is necessary to clean it from macro and micro contaminants of various nature: sand, dust, aerosol suspensions, odors, smoke, steam, toxic gases, infectious and radioactive particles, etc.
    A simple panel air filter consists of a cut of filter media fixed with a grid. The filter element is in turn fastened with a metal U-shaped frame profile. Panel filters are placed at the air intake for basic air cleaning from large contaminants.
    A cassette filter with panel construction is an upgraded panel filter. The filter media in a cassette filter is "crumpled" into a fold (pleated) and fixed on a pleated support grid. The pleated filter element is placed in a metal U-shaped or rigid rectangular frame.
    The filter element of such designs is represented by a voluminous non-woven material sewn in the form of pocket bags fixed in a rigid frame on crossbars. The greater the number and depth of pockets, the larger the filter surface area and the longer the product's service life. Depending on the type of filter media used, pocket filters are suitable for the first and second stages of air purification.
    In compact W-type filters, a pleated filter pack is installed in the housing at an angle to the airflow in the form of W-shaped zigzags. The W-shape of the filter element is fixed by a reinforced grid. The filter pack itself is placed in a lightweight, impact-resistant, moisture-resistant polymer housing. The pleating and compact arrangement of the filter element significantly increases the effective area of the filter media. This increases dust holding capacity, and therefore the duration of the product's operation.
    HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Absorption) filters are highly efficient devices for final ultra-fine air purification that has undergone preliminary (coarse and fine) treatment. The mechanism of capturing contaminating microparticles in HEPA filters is fundamentally different from others and is due to the adhesive properties of the filter fiber. A HEPA cartridge is a filter pack made of ultra-thin corrugated separated glass paper hermetically mounted in the housing profile.

    INFORMATION

    Air filters are an essential functional element of residential and industrial ventilation and exhaust systems. Filtration of supply and exhaust air is necessary to clean it from macro and micro contaminants of various nature: sand, dust, aerosol suspensions, odors, smoke, steam, toxic gases, infectious and radioactive particles, etc.

    Air filters for ventilation systems of the PHAUF brand are manufactured by the domestic company LLC «Research and Production Enterprise «MICROSYSTEM».

    PHAUF filters provide:

    • creation of an optimal and comfortable microclimate for people and production processes in residential and industrial environments;
    • protection against contamination, wear, and damage to the air ducts themselves, functional units of ventilation, air conditioning, and air heating systems;
    • cleaning of exhaust air in working areas from various industrial pollutants as part of ensuring the environmental safety of a specific production;
    • maintenance of hygienic requirements (ISO air cleanliness classes) established by international and national standards in special work areas – cleanrooms and related controlled environments.

    The quality and innovative approaches of PHAUF for air filtration systems comply with the strict requirements of the European standard EN 779:2012. Our company offers the most popular filter designs of various filtration classes for any system applications. A brief introduction to their design and purpose will help you make the right choice.

    Panel filters

    A simple panel air filter consists of a cut of filter media fixed with a grid. The filter element is in turn fastened with a metal U-shaped frame profile.

    Panel filters are placed at the air intake for basic air cleaning from large contaminants:

    • coarse dust, dirt, sand;
    • flying insects;
    • leaves, feathers, fur, etc.

    Advantages of panel filters:

    • рigh durability;
    • simple design;
    • low initial pressure drop;
    • removable filter element – for filter regeneration, the used filter media is removed and replaced with a new one;
    • low product cost.

    Used for basic (coarse) air purification in residential, public, and industrial premises:

    • in supply ventilation units;
    • in dehumidifiers;
    • special panel filters can be used in aspiration systems of paint booths.

    Filtration classes: G2, G3, G4, M5.

    Subject to regeneration.

    Cassette filters

    A cassette filter with panel construction is an upgraded panel filter.

    The filter media in a cassette filter is «crumpled» into a fold (pleated) and fixed on a pleated support grid.

    The pleated filter element is placed in a metal U-shaped or rigid rectangular frame.

    Depending on the nature of the filter material, cassette filters can be used for both coarse and medium air purification at the first and second stages of filtration of the supply and exhaust air flow.

    They are included in the configuration of industrial and residential ventilation units of any type.

    Filtration classes: G2, G3, G4, M5.

    Subject to regeneration depending on the model.

    Pocket filters

    The filter element of such designs is represented by a voluminous non-woven material sewn in the form of pocket bags fixed in a rigid frame on crossbars.

    The greater the number and depth of pockets, the larger the filter surface area and the longer the product’s service life.

    Depending on the type of filter media used, pocket filters are suitable for the first and second stages of air purification.

    They are used in all kinds of residential and industrial supply and exhaust ventilation systems of buildings and production facilities.

    Filtration classes: G3, G4, M5, M6, F7, F8, F9.

    NOT subject to regeneration.

    Compact W-shaped filters

    In compact W-type filters, a pleated filter pack is installed in the housing at an angle to the airflow in the form of W-shaped zigzags.

    The W-shape of the filter element is fixed by a reinforced grid. The filter pack itself is placed in a lightweight, impact-resistant, moisture-resistant polymer housing.

    The pleating and compact arrangement of the filter element significantly increases the effective area of the filter media. This increases dust holding capacity, and therefore the duration of the product’s operation.

    W-shaped compact filters are designed for medium and fine air purification. They capture fine and aerosol contaminant particles. They serve as the second or third stage of filtration for airflow that has undergone preliminary coarse cleaning.

    Compact filters are most often used:

    • in industrial multi-section supply and exhaust ventilation and air conditioning systems;
    • in gas turbine installations;
    • as a protective screen for HEPA absolute filters.

    Filtration classes: M5, M6, F7, F8, F9.

    NOT subject to regeneration.

    High-efficiency HEPA filters

    HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Absorption) filters are highly efficient devices for final ultra-fine air purification that has undergone preliminary (coarse and fine) treatment.

    The mechanism of capturing contaminating microparticles in HEPA filters is fundamentally different from others and is due to the adhesive properties of the filter fiber.

    A HEPA cartridge is a filter pack made of ultra-thin corrugated separated glass paper hermetically mounted in the housing profile.

    High-efficiency filters perform «sterilization» of air in cleanrooms with established ISO cleanliness classes (GOST ISO 14644-1-2002), providing the highest sanitary and hygienic requirements for the internal space of special zones and workrooms for high-precision equipment.

    HEPA filters are designed for final air purification from micro aerosol contaminants of various nature, bacteria, viruses, other microorganisms, radio- and nanoparticles.

    The «price» of absolute purification is a rather high pressure drop of the filter. Their use in residential ventilation units is not always advisable.

    The family of absolute filters manufactured by LLC «NPP «MICROSYSTEM» includes products of classes: EPA, HEPA, and ULPA.

    Regular customers of PHAUF brand HEPA products:

    • medical institutions;
    • food industry enterprises;
    • research and clinical laboratories;
    • pharmaceutical, radio and microelectronics, optics, nuclear energy enterprises, etc.

    Filtration classes: E10, E11, E12, H13, H14, U15, U16.

    NOT subject to regeneration.

    Filter classes by air purification efficiency

    In accordance with the updated European standard (national analog GOST R EN 779-2014), air filters are divided into three main groups based on their efficiency:

    • filters for preliminary (coarse) air purification — filtration classes G1-G4;
    • filters for intermediate (medium) and fine air purification — classes M5-M6 and F7-F9 respectively;
    • absolute filters — classes E/H/U-10-17.

    Coarse filters

    Coarse filtration refers to capturing contaminants larger than 10 μm from the airflow.

    Coarse air filters for ventilation systems (classes G2-G4):

    • panel: FPT (FFP, FVP);
    • cassette: FKT (FVKas FGP);
    • pocket: PFPE/PFPP/PFGF (FVK FFK).

    Medium and fine filters

    Medium filtration refers to capturing contaminating particles larger than 5 μm from the airflow.

    Medium air filters for ventilation systems (classes M5-M6):

    • pocket: PFPE/PFPP/PFGF (FVK FFK, FVKug (carbon));
    • compact: W-type: FCW (PLA) (FVKom-W);
    • cassette: FKT (FVKas FGP).

    Fine filtration refers to capturing contaminating particles larger than 1 μm from the airflow.

    Fine air filters for ventilation systems (classes F7-F9):

    • pocket: PFPE/PFPP/PFGF (FVK FFK, FVKug (carbon));
    • compact: W-type: FCW (PLA, PLA-GT) (FVKom-W, FVKomY-W (carbon)).

    High-efficiency EPA/HEPA filters

    High-efficiency (absolute) filtration refers to capturing suspended particles smaller than 1 micron (μm) from the airflow supplied to the filter.

    Absolute EPA filters (classes E10-E12) retain 85% to 95% of such contaminants.

    The efficiency of HEPA filters (classes H13-H14) is measured by the number of nano-sized particles that penetrate through the filter and ranges from 99.95% to 99.995%.

    Ultra-high efficiency absolute filters (classes E10-E12-H13-H14-U15-U17):

    • PFF (FVA-2) with separator;
    • cassette: high-performance W-type: FCW (FVA-NS).

    Ultra-high efficiency ULPA filters

    Air that has undergone ultra-high efficiency filtration by ULPA filters (class U15-U17) is practically sterile.

    The local penetration value of nano-sized particles through the filter element is ≤0.0001%. The air purification efficiency reaches 99.999995% and higher.

    A clear example of ULPA filters use is air sterilization in cleanrooms of pharmaceutical productions certified according to the international GMP standard. Local personnel work in special technological clothing (sterile coveralls and shoe covers) to avoid «contaminating» the air treated by absolute ULPA filters.

    Types of filter media

    The efficiency of an air filter of a particular design largely depends on the grade of filter material used in it.

    • general characteristics of such filter materials:
    • non-woven fine-fiber or porous structure;
    • fire safety class F1 according to DIN 53438;
    • moisture resistance (ability to work effectively at high air humidity);
    • heat resistance (ability to work effectively at very low and very high air temperatures);
    • environmental friendliness.

    Chemical fiber, 100% polyester

    The term «100% polyester» refers to a wide range of various grades of chemical (synthetic) filter materials made from high-quality polyester fiber (syntepone, polyfiber, polyester, lavsan, PET).

    It is designed for various constructions of air filters for coarse and medium filtration of classes G2-M6.

    Meltblown

    A polymeric voluminous non-woven material based on ultra-fine polypropylene fibers with a thickness of 1-5 microns.

    It maintains good air permeability and excellent filtration properties even at 100% relative air humidity.

    It is used for manufacturing pocket air filters for medium and fine filtration of classes M6-F9.

    Combined SMS filter material

    The multi-component SMS filter material is a three-layer composition, bonded using ultrasonic welding with longitudinal and transverse seams. Fusion of pockets is prevented by longitudinal separators.

    Structure of the combined SMS filter media of PHAUF brand:

    • 1st layer – colored Spunbond for capturing fine contaminant suspensions (fine filtration);
    • 2nd layer – electrostatically charged Meltblown;
    • 3rd layer (support filter) – colorless polyester Spunbond for capturing large particles (coarse filtration).

    SMS material is used in fine air filters of classes M5-F9.

     Paint Stop glass fiber

    This filtering glass fiber is formed from thin glass threads laid in a characteristic layered structure (each layer gradually compacts).

    It is used for cleaning heavily contaminated air in heavily dusty environments and capturing liquid aerosol particles (for example, in paint booths).

    Used in coarse panel filters of classes G3-G4.

    Glass paper

    Glass paper is formed from combined threads that are thinner compared to glass fiber.

    The material does not absorb moisture and does not lose its filtering abilities in environments with high air humidity.

    Used in compact fine air filters of classes F7-F9.

    Glass paper with carbon chips is used in fine carbon filters that capture micro-aerosol contaminants and odors.

    PHAUF ultra-thin glass fiber paper

    For the production of absolute HEPA filter packs, a special filter glass paper is used, formed from randomly arranged and tightly packed ultra-thin nanofibers with a size of 0.7-6.5 microns.

    Frequency of air filter replacement for ventilation

    The individual replacement time for any air filter can be determined in two ways.

    Method #1

    By filter resistance.

    The pressure differential at the inlet and outlet of the airflow can be measured using pressure sensors installed on both sides of the filter, or with a differential pressure gauge (manometer).
    Scheduled filter replacement is performed when the recommended final pressure drop values are reached.

    Method #2

    By the operating time of the filter set by the manufacturer.

    In residential multi-stage filtration ventilation supply and exhaust systems, the first stage filter for outdoor air cleaning (G3-G4) gets contaminated first. It is typically recommended to change it once every 3 months.

    The second stage filter of class M5-F7 is changed on average with an interval from six months to a year, depending on the dust level of the outdoor air. A similar exhaust filter «from the house» is sufficient to replace once a year.

    The service life of fine filters of class F9 usually does not exceed one quarter (3 months).

    Filter regeneration after use

    No air textile or glass fiber filter can be washed, laundered, or vacuumed. The fluffy structure of the filter material after such «cleaning» flattens and loses its filtering properties. Moreover, retained contaminants from the thickness of the filter material are not washed out.

    Used filters in ventilation and air conditioning systems should simply be replaced with new ones, which are fortunately inexpensive.

    Panel and cassette filters G2-G4 with a U-shaped profile can be regenerated at the consumer’s request by replacing the contaminated filter media with a new one of the appropriate filtration class — either independently or with the involvement of specialists.
